Bamboo – An Environmental Giant

Watching the Giant Panda sitting around eating it’s favorite food, Bamboo, you wouldn’t think that same source of nutrition for Pandas also turns out to be one of the Environmental Giants of our planet, but it is. Children play on it as do professional athletes, grass, just in a much larger version. It can be found in most locations across the globe from Asia, Australia, North America, South America,to the African continent. In environments where the climate combined with the soil is just right it is the fastest growing plant on the planet sometimes growing as much as one meter per day. Typically though it grows 1 – 4 inches daily reaching it’s full height it’s first year. It’s root system is called a rhizome, a horizontal stem of a plant that is usually found underground, often sending out roots and shoots from its nodes. Asparagus, irises and ginger are also similarly cultivated  this way. The culms(shoots) are ready to harvest after three to five years.
